“Teach me how to love

Show me the way to surrender my heart…”

~Musiq Soulchild, “Teachme”

A thick branch of vines goes horizontally across the top third of the image. From the branch are gray brown tendrils of vine branches with yellow blooms shooting upwards, downwards, and sideways. They lie atop a white, ribbed concrete wall.

We were two individuals

going through life

giving our love surplus away

all willy-nilly.

When we found each other

that balmy August evening

at the pizza pub

cooling on craft brews

we had not yet discovered

a match in each other

but we would.

When we decide to be exclusive,

you say:

I have a lot of love to give. Are you willing to accept?

My reply:

I, too, have a lot of love to give.

With those admissions

we grew.

Through each other and together

we learned not to settle for anything less

than what we were willing to accept.

We laid seedlings of boundaries

watered them with directness,

sunned them in compassion,

and from them came sprouts

transforming into vines

that have grown thick,

strong, and resilient.

Our love continues its sprawl

from boundaries,

directness, and compassion.

Here is the video to the song that inspired this piece:
