a prose poem
In my repressed fam,
I am the baddie.
Because I dare!
to raise my voice and concern
for the iniquities thrust upon the underdogs,
to challenge the misinformation volleyed
from one mouth to another.
I am that asshole that says “fuck”
to children that have been taught to
pacify their saying “frig, frick, and freakin’.”
I am that bitch who will explain
why queer is acceptable and all lives matter is never ok.
And I am that sister, daughter, cousin, niece, granddaughter, and auntie
that will challenge only within my family
because that has been my ascribed role.
If you ask anyone else — anyone who knows me
I am a bleeding hearted introvert who
wants to speak up but only has the ovaries
to write about my feelings
because a childhood of abuse
taught me that I shant take up space
with my voice and that to please others
I must only care about what is pleasing to them.
