Remember the Butterfly

Remember the butterfly,

when life gets hard,

and you want to cry or die.

For it is said,

when the butterfly is

in the chrysalis stage

it struggles inside the cocoon.

Maybe it is impatiently waiting

for what is sure to be more.

The excitement, the dread, the uncertainty

have it writhing and wrestling

inside the tight folds and wraps of the cocoon.

Yet, the struggle — whatever it is —

for the butterfly is what

infuses its wings with colors.

Hold on dear creature,

for your growth, your metamorphosis

will give you wings to soar.

When you fly, it’s okay to cry,

but do not forget

the land, the space, the people, the face

with which you began.

A brown swallowtail butterfly hangs from a cocoon attached to a twig where several cocoons are attached and unopened.
