The Majestic Tree
It starts as a seed pod
the size of a head on a nail.
With any luck,
it will land in some fertile soil
that has access to sun and water.
If conditions are right,
the pod will bust
and a sprout will wend its way out
continuing to unfurl
green leaves and tendrils.
The struggle, the work, the growth
have just begun.
The delicate greens have to
find the energy to keep rising
through the depths of earth
until they break the surface
cracking it and bursting forth.
Ahh, a reprieve.
In need of some heat and a good drink!
The next struggle is around the corner.
There are bugs, animals, molds, poisons, storms, and humans to battle.
If I manage to survive these impediments to my growth,
I stand a chance to reach my full potential
and when I do I will become a harbor
for bugs, animals, and humans.
I will grow through adversity.
I will develop a bark to protect my interior
and burrow my roots far, wide, and deep in the earth.
They say I am wise and maybe it is because
my kind has survived and thrived
since the beginning
despite the attempts to thwart me.
We learned how to communicate with each other under ground.
To warn of blight and things that have harmed us.
We outlive most of earth’s living creatures and
when we get cut down we live on in homes and habitats
while our roots remain.
So, even though we are removed
we remain — repurposed, rooted, and retold.
